Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was committed to depicting landscapes throughout his entire life, yet within Picasso’s vast oeuvre, landscapes have received the least scholarly attention. Landscapes offer the clearest lens for understanding Picasso’s attentiveness to his cultural milieu as well as to his ongoing engagement with art-historical traditions.

Alongside this special exhibition on view until May 21, 2023 at Mint Museum Uptown, this catalogue written by Peter Jonathan Bell, Jacques Rancière and Laurence Madeline celebrates the depth of his exploration of landscape subjects along with his expansive approach to this traditional genre and is structured around some 50 exhibitions and events that are being held in renowned cultural institutions in Europe and North America to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death.

In celebration of ‘100 Years of Scholastic Art & Writing Awards’, we are honored to house these impeccable award-winning pieces from students across 26 counties in the Mid-Carolina region who won gold and silver keys for the work displayed in this year’s show!

This exhibition is on view in our Mint5pace on Level 5 of Mint Museum Uptown until April 23, 2023!

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards date back to 1923. Over the years, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious program for creative teens in the United States, and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.

This Saturday, March 18 from 2-6 PM, we will be hosting the Afternoon Salon: Romare Bearden and Modernism in celebration of connecting cultures and Women’s History Month at Mint Museum Uptown.

Learn about the life and works of Romare Bearden in a discussion with published author Richard Powell, Ph.D., Duke University professor, and Romare Bearden Foundation advisor; Denise Murrell, Ph.D., curator-at-large at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It will be moderated by Diedra Harris-Kelly, co-director of the Romare Bearden Foundation.

Following the program, enjoy a jazz reception featuring songbird Dawn Anthony and the Lovell Bradford Trio. Light bites and a cash bar will be available in the atrium.

Who wants to join us in a game of Playing Pablo?

In honor of Picasso Landscapes: Out of Bounds, we partnered with Talking Walls to select eleven phenomenal artists to create their own rendition of one of Pablo Picasso’s landscapes or his monumental anti-war painting Guernica, and they are putting on the final touches!

In alignment with Talking Walls’ mission to beautify the Queen City with large-scale paintings for all to enjoy, the Playing Pablo murals are located across Charlotte and we can’t wait for you to spot one!

How to play? If you see a mural, simply take a picture in front of it and tag us. The murals are located at Mint Museum Uptown (Level 5), Camp North End, Optimist Hall and Queens University. Mint Museum Randolph mural coming soon. Be on the lookout for updates!

We have partnered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to host guided tours for students led by our museum educators. From collaborative engagement to learning about the works of Pablo Picasso and Romare Bearden, these students are raising the bar with their creative responses through open discussion, sketching, and many other forms of artistic expression!
