Go on a virtual gallery tour of The Library in The Mint Museum’s “Classic Black” exhibition
Explore the second gallery of Classic Black: The Basalt Sculpture of Josiah Wedgwood and His Contemporaries with curator Brian Gallagher. The library was where everyone in the family could retreat to read, play parlor games, write and relax. Bookcases were decorated with portrait busts that represented authors of books they owned, such as Shakespeare, John Dryden, Socrates and Sir Isaac Newton.
Overall, the exhibition is a visual feast: Not only is it the first exhibition in the world to focus on black basalt sculpture, but the presentation is completely contemporary. The Mint worked with the local muralist and street artist known as Owl to help design the spaces with a graphic language that complements the stunning works.
