Face Pitcher

circa 1920

Ernest A. Hilton (American, 1878 - 1948)

Brothers Shuford, Claude, and Ernest Hilton established the Hilton Pottery Company in Hickory in 1918. They worked together for about ten years before Ernest left to set up his own shop in nearby Oyama. This face pitcher is the only one known to be made by Hilton Pottery. Hilton modeled the face from inside the vessel to form its nose and chin, and indented the vessel from the outside to form its eyes and mouth. He applied additional clay for the ears.
