A court suit comprises a fitted, three-quarters length coat with side and back pleats, a waistcoat (vest), and knee-length breeches - all made of fine fabrics ornamented with elegant buttons, trims and/or lavish embroidery work. This suit was worn by Major J. Tempest of Tong Hall, Bradford (Yorkshire), England to the royal wedding of Marie Antoinette to Louis Auguste, the Dauphin (later to be King Louis XVI) at the palace of Versailles outside of Paris, France on May 16, 1770.
