Behind the Seams Project

Mint Museum RANDOLPH

Wednesday, Dec 17-Dec 19

1:00PM - 5:00PM

Admission: Free after museum admission

Inside the historic Belk, Jones, and Dwelle galleries at Mint Museum Randolph, museum staff will thoroughly examine, condition report, clean, move from the platform in the Belk Gallery to the runway in the Jones Gallery, and photograph the exquisite 19th Century L. P. Hollander & Company Wedding Dress  (Museum Purchase: Auxiliary Costume Fund 2003.74A-B).  This wedding gown belonged to Alice Faye Otis, the daughter of prominent Bostonians. In 1884 she wed Dr. Walter Otis, a wealthy Boston psychiatrist. Although the exact date of their wedding is not known, the heavy fabric of the gown suggests a fall or winter ceremony. A couture creation from L. P. Hollander & Company of Boston, Newport and Paris. Featuring the classic bustle silhouette of the Gilded Age, the dress boasts a 100 ½ inch train lined underneath with row after row of French lace hidden unless the train was lifted to reveal this extravagance.

As an ongoing project, museum experts will allow the public to peek "Behind the Seams" of our Fashion Collection throughout the year. Check back on our website for details on what will be happening during the third week of each month!
