SUMMARY:The Art of Reading: "The Trackers"
DESCRIPTION:The Trackers is Charles Frazier’s first book set outside the American South. However\, the story takes place in 1937\, a year shared with many of the artworks in our Southern/Modern exhibition\, with multiple connections that can be made between the book and the exhibition. \nThe story follows a young painter from Virginia who receives a federal commission to create a mural for a small-town post office in Wyoming. Similar to WPA assignments\, his mural is to be inspirational and uplifting in light of the lingering depression. Valentine Welch\, the painter and main character\, captures the mood of the country and the difficult living conditions of some of its citizens at that time. At the same time\, he finds adventure and intrigue as he travels across the country in search of a missing painting. \n

SUMMARY:The Art of Reading: “The Warmth of Other Suns”
DESCRIPTION:Isabel Wilkerson’s book follows three individuals\, representative of the six million Black Southerners who participated in the Great Migration to northern or western destinations. The Wall Street Journal’s review of this work states “Ms. Wilkerson does for the Great Migration what John Steinbeck did for the Okies in his fiction masterpiece\, The Grapes of Wrath.” \nAfter a conversation about Warmth\, take a docent-led tour of works in Mint Museum Uptown’s American Art\, Modern + Contemporary\, and Craft + Design collections to draw connections between this work and our art. \n“I was taking a part of the South to see \nIf it could grow differently\, \nIf it could bend in strange winds\, \nRespond to the warmth of other suns \nAnd\, perhaps\, to bloom.” – Richard Wright\, Black Boy: A Record of Childhood and Youth (poem edited for effect)

DESCRIPTION:Members enjoy a presentation and gallery conversations in Women of Land and Smoke: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide and Maya Goded (Las Mujeres de Tierra y Humo: Las Fotografías de Graciela Iturbide y Maya Goded) with Jen Sudul Edwards\, Ph.D.\, Chief Curator & Curator of Contemporary Art.\nWomen of Land and Smoke includes over 50 photographs that present an overview of Iturbide and Goded’s careers that span the Americas. Their work records the stories of communities that must balance tradition and change\, particularly in response to the external influences of globalization and industrialization. Over decades of exploring communities\, whether urban or isolated\, Iturbide and Goded have found women as the consistent force holding these fragmenting societies together. \n10:00 AM- 10:30 AM: Light refreshments (Conchas and hot chocolate)\n10:30 AM- 11:00 AM: Presentation in the Auditorium\n11:00 AM- Noon: Conversations in the exhibition \nJoin us on January 18th at Mint Randolph at 10:00 AM! \nNot a member?
