SUMMARY:Carolina Shout Workshop with Beverly Smith
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED FOR A LATER DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED \nJoin artist Beverly Smith\, who has a work featured in the installation Echoes created in response to Romare Bearden’s Carolina Shout\, for a chat and fiber art workshop. \nRegistration required\, seats are limited. \nAbout the artist: \nI am a mixed media fiber artist. I choose to express myself through quilts because of its personal connection to my ancestors and Southern roots. My figure renderings come from live models\, and photographs based on legendary and people of personal importance\, such as my 98-year-old mother\, sisters\, and friends. It is typical for my quilts to contain vintage and re-claimed garments\, as well as nostalgic materials transforming my figures into ancestors that tell stories from another time.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Live | In Cahoots: The Collaborations and Communions of Pinky/MM Bass and Carolyn DeMeritt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with artists Pinky/MM Bass and Carolyn DeMeritt\, longtime friends and collaborators. Moderated by Chief Curator and Curator of Curator of Contemporary Art Jen Sudul Edwards\, PhD\, the conversation will focus on how artists collaborate and the creative relationships that grow through intentional artistic projects and initiatives. The talk will be followed by a book signing of entwined\, created by Bass and DeMeritt that addresses themes of incarnation\, aging\, death\, and regenerations through striking visuals using the human body as a subject. Copies of the book will be available for purchase on site. \nPhotos from the series by Carolyn DeMeritt featuring Pinky/MM Bass is on view on Level 4 in the contemporary galleries at Mint Museum Uptown. \nThe talk will be bookended by performances of the Yale Whiffenpoofs — the world’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group — in the Morrison Atrium. Singing a mixture of old Yale tunes\, jazz standards\, and other hits from across the decades\, the Whiffenpoofs perform more than 200 concerts across six continents each year. \nFirst performance takes place 6-6:30 PM\, followed by a second performance from 7:45 PM to 8:15 PM. \nAbout the artists: \nPinky/MM Bass returned to college for an MFA in painting and drawing at age 50\, Bass discovered her true voice in photography through installation\, mixed media\, and performance figure prominently in her current work. Carolyn DeMeritt is a self-taught photographer and videographer who has worked in their craft for over 35 years. She and Bass have participated in numerous solo and invitational exhibitions across the country and internationally. \n
