SUMMARY:Opening Celebration for 'Southern/Modern'
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy free museum admission for the opening celebration of Southern/Modern. The exhibition is the first to provide a comprehensive survey of progressive art created in the American South during the first half of the 20th century. \nCreated in collaboration with Georgia Museum of Art\, the exhibition includes more than 100 paintings and works on paper by artists working in states below the Mason-Dixon line and as far west as those bordering the Mississippi River\, as well as some artists living outside of the region who made significant bodies of work during visits. \nCurated by the Mint’s Senior Curator of American Art Jonathan Stuhlman\, PhD\, and independent scholar Martha Severens\, Southern/Modern takes a broad view of the South and is structured around key themes that traverse geographic regions\, including time and place\, race\, family ties\, and social struggles. It also takes a broad\, inclusive view of the art of the region\, incorporating the creativity and talent of women artists and artists of color across its various thematic sections to provide a fuller\, richer\, and more accurate overview of the artistic activity in the American South at the time.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Live: Film screening of Maya Goded's "Plaza de la Soledad"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening of “Plaza de la Soledad” by Maya Goded\, one of the featured artists in the upcoming exhibition\, Women of Land and Smoke: The Photographs of Graciela Iturbide and Maya Goded. Goded’s photography explores female identity while addressing themes of sexuality\, gender violence\, and resilience against oppression. \nThe film\, set in La Merced in downtown Mexico City\, offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of women in the sex trade. Goded reveals the harsh realities they navigate—abuse\, fear\, and the emotional toll of selling intimacy—while also honoring their histories\, families\, superstitions\, and dreams. “Plaza de la Soledad” captures the beauty and complexity of their bodies\, reminding us of their strength and humanity. \nEnjoy a cash bar and popcorn. Introduction by Chief Curator Jen Sudul Edwards\, PhD\, at 6 PM\, followed by the film screening.

SUMMARY:Women of Land and Smoke Curator Talk
DESCRIPTION:Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art Jen Sudul Edwards\, PhD\, introduces the poignant and powerful photography exhibition Women of Land and Smoke: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide and Maya Goded\, discussing themes throughout the exhibition\, followed by a Q-and-A session.* \nAbout the exhibition \nInternationally renowned photographers Graciela Iturbide and Maya Goded  have created revealing images that examine the intersection of contemporary life and centuries-long practices throughout North and South America. Both artists\, hailing from Mexico City\, have dedicated their practice to spending extensive time with their subjects before photographing them. This creates an intimacy and a knowledge of the particular challenges and dynamics embedded in the communities they document. Through their lens\, Iturbide and Goded consistently highlight the vital role of women in holding together fragmenting societies\, whether in urban or isolated communities. This is the first exhibition to present the work of Iturbide and Goded in tandem. \nWomen of Land and Smoke: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide and Maya Goded (Las Mujeres de Tierra y Humo: Las Fotografías de Graciela Iturbide y Maya Goded) features over 50 photographs that present an overview of the artists’ careers\, spanning decades and diverse series. \n*Due to a family emergency\, Maya Goded will not be able to attend this event as previously scheduled.
