Marcel Wanders was born in Boxtel, just south of Amsterdam, in 1963. After graduating from the Arnhem School for the Arts, he opened his own studio in Amsterdam. He became famous in 1996 for his Knotted Chair, now an icon of late twentieth-century design, produced for the influential Dutch design collective Droog. In 2001, he co-founded the design label Moooi, and now designs for global brands including Puma, KLM-Royal Dutch Airlines, Google, Target, and M.A.C. Cosmetics.
Zeppelin S1 was designed by Wanders and is produced by FLOS, an Italian lighting company. Its white powder-coated steel structure is sprayed with a “cocoon” resin to provide diffused light. A faceted crystal globe in the center creates a softly sparkling effect. Zeppelin S1 is a nod to the groundbreaking use of spray-on cocoon resin on hanging lamps in the late 1950s by the Italian designers, brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, and the American designer George Nelson.
