New York businessman Victor Obler founded the Royal Crown Pottery and Porcelain Company in 1939, selecting the name for his new pottery after seeing an advertisement for Royal Crown Cola. Obler hired Jack Kiser, Thurston Cole, Charlie Craven, and other Seagrove-area potters to work there. Craven threw large pieces, such as the present example.
Although the pottery was commercially successful, Obler had to close it after only three years when the advent of World War II created difficulties in his acquiring the necessary materials for his glazes.
