Siobhan Hapaska (Irish, 1963 - present)

Siobhan Hapaska's sculpture explores the interplay of nature and artifice. Encased in a glass box is a pine tree, denuded of its needles, which are carefully packed into scores of clear glass ornaments. The adornments contain faded remnants of the tree's once fragrant needles. Taken out of its natural context, the tree is brittle and stripped to its bare form, yet it is also vigilantly preserved. Presented in this manner, this natural object becomes a meditation on presence and absence as well as life and death.
