Walter Benjamin Stephen founded Pisgah Forest Pottery in Arden, North Carolina, in 1926 and ran it until his death in 1961. He is most famous for his cameo wares. These are vessels that have been decorated with the pâte-sur-pâte technique, in which thin white slip (liquid clay) is applied in successive layers to a colored background to create a slightly raised design.
