Covered Jar

circa 2003

Herbert Cohen (American, 1931 - present)

Cohen is known for his sophisticated surface decoration, often adorning the surfaces of his pottery with intricate and complex abstract patterns, or through the application of innovative and experimental glazes. Many potters use manufactured glazes; however, Cohen formulates his own. Cohen has achieved a vibrant crimson-colored glaze to complement the form of this casserole, or covered jar. Notice the attention to details such as the expertly modeled curlicue handle, and the way the lid fits precisely in the curved lip of the jar.
