Reception Gown (bodice and skirt)

circa 1895-1900

House of Worth (, 1858 - 1956)

The concept of haute couture, or custom-made fashions, began in 1857 when Charles Frederick Worth opened his maison in Paris. His designs would dominate the fashion world for nearly forty years, and thereafter by his sons, Jacques and Pierre, following their father's death in 1895. This elegant gown is one example of the seven or eight outfits that a lady in high society might wear within a single day.
