Prevalence of Ritual: Tidings

Romare H. Bearden (American, 1911 - 1988)

A continuation of the works of art in the Prevalence of Ritual series begun nearly a decade earlier, this collage provides another variation on the recurring theme of the Annunciation. Returning to this composition time and again, each new variation diverges in some way from the previous iteration. Here, the figure who is traditionally understood as Gabriel retains his wings, yet dons an earring and a modern jacket. The sky is gray, yet the rainbow emerges from behind the clouds, pointing towards a better future yet to come; the train, this time may be seen as a comrade in this journey of progress.
