Portrait of a Young Girl

circa 1840-1855

Thomas Sully (American, 1783 - 1872)

This young girl wears a typical crinoline dress fashioned much like an adult’s garment but with a shorter hemline adjusted for her youth. It suggests a rich silk taffeta fabric that speaks to the social position of the girl.
