Princess Feather Quilt

circa 1850

(, - present)

Textile historians compare the appliqué design in the Princess Feather Quilt to an old Germanic folk design called Prince's Feather. The design many have been named after a plant named Prince's Feather or Amaranthus, identifiable by its red and green leaves and long, willowy stems. Most Princess Feather appliqué designs feature six or eight plumes. This quilt, however, has a five-plume design in blue, probably the quilter's personal innovation.
