Album Crib Quilt

circa 1870

(, - present)

When mastered, appliqué allows for much more experimentation than piecing. The appliqué bird on a swing in this Album Crib Quilt may have originated as a child's drawing or a tracing of a wallpaper design. With the necessary design components cut from the proper colored cloth, the quilter could assemble the design, baste it to the cloth, and anchor it with little stitches to the background cloth.
