Gentleman's Formal Suit

circa 1885-1900

(, - present)

A gentleman’s evening attire consisted of a dress coat, vest, and trousers worn with bibbed shirt front, wing-tipped collar, and a bow tie or ascot. The dress coat, with its front cut well to the side and thus giving the back the appearance of a ''swallowtail,” was reserved for evening formal wear. A beaver fur or silk top hat and either white or grey kid gloves completed the ensemble.
