Some vases imagery refers to religious concepts and myths. This vase recounts a vignette from the Popol Vuh, a sacred text of the Maya that concerns the Hero Twins Hun Ajaw and Yax Balam. They were sacrificed by the lords of the Underworld who ground up their bones and threw the powder into the river. They miraculously reappeared as catfish, the spots on one of the fish identifying him as Hun Ajaw whose cheeks are characteristically marked with black dots.
