Holzapfel, an accomplished turner and carver, is one of six women in the Mason Collection. Her work reflects the power of beauty that prevails in nature, and emphasizes history and domestic life. Holzapfel is fascinated by the "grotesque beauty" found in the burls she turns and carves. "Releasing" the object from a burl is often tempered by the risk of working with temperamental and irregular grain patterns in the wood. Holzapfel recognizes the necessity of cooperating with the wood, rather than overpowering it. This symbiotic relationship results in fascinating carved vessel forms and sculptures.
