Born on the lower east side of Manhattan, Herb Cohen first learned to throw on the potter’s wheel at the remarkable young age of six, and has continued to practice the craft throughout his life. After earning his MFA from the prestigious New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Cohen worked as a designer for Hyalyn Porcelain Company in Hickory, North Carolina. He eventually settled in Charlotte in the late 1950’s where he joined the staff of The Mint Museum as exhibitions director and became instrumental in spearheading the regional craft and pottery movement. The Delhom Service League is especially pleased to recognize Herb Cohen as the honorary chairperson of the Potters Market Invitational this year, as The Mint Museum celebrates its 75th anniversary as an art institution.
