You’re Right!

Many food items such as jellies, jams, and preserved fruits were stored in pottery jars. Sometimes the potter would make lids, like the one this jar has. If the jar did not have a lid, cloth, wax or even pig's bladders were used to seal the jar.

This storage jar was made by Manley R Moffit from Randolph County in the 1800s. If you look closely you can see his name on the jar.
