A spittoon is a bowl for spitting into. Kind of yucky isn’t it! This was probably used by a man or woman who chewed tobacco or dipped snuff. The chewer or dipper would spit into the larger opening in the top. Later they would empty the spittoon by pouring the liquid out the small hole on the side.

This stoneware spittoon was made by Ruffin Cole in Moore County. Ruffin lived from 1859 – 1931.
