Men would use a mug, soap, a brush, water and a straight-edge razor to shave. The small opening in the mug held a brush that looked like a short, fat, paintbrush made from horsehair. Men would put soap and water in the large part of the bowl and mix it into a foam with the brush. Then they would brush the foam onto their face before shaving.

This shaving mug was made by an unknown potter in the Piedmont region of North Carolina in the early 1900s.
