A chamber pot is a portable toilet that was used before houses had running water and bathrooms. Often people would keep a chamber pot under the bed.

Before modern plumbing, families would have an "outhouse" in the yard. An outhouse is a very small building over an outdoor toilet. On cold winter nights or when the weather was bad, families would use chamber pots rather than the outhouse. Aren’t you glad we have modern plumbing at school and at home!

This chamber pot was made by Burlon B. Craig in Lincoln County. Burlon B. Craig made this chamber pot in the 1980s using the pottery traditions of the 1880s.
