This is a ring jug. A ring jug is a pottery canteen. Soldiers during
the Civil War probably used it to carry water.
Why is it shaped like a donut?
The round shape helps keep the water cool. It also made it easy to carry.
Soldiers could put their arm through the hole. If they had a horse,
they could hang it on the horn of their saddle.
Are they still used today?
Soldiers don't use ring jugs, but potters still make them. Many people
find them fun and unusual things to own.
This ring jug was made by William Penland around 1930.
