This is a map of North Carolina. It shows what was known about the state in 1775.

It’s hard to see
anything. What’s on
this map?

This map shows Native American paths and territories, rivers, lakes, mountains and several villages. It also shows the Great Trading Path. This map would have been very valuable to settlers as they traveled from the coast to the Piedmont.

Where are the Mountains?

Look how there are more details along the coast and less as we get to the mountains on the left. In fact, very little of the western part of the state is shown on this map. In 1775 very few European settlers had ever gone to this part of the state.

Who made this map?

This map was made in 1775 by Italian mapmaker Henry Mouzon.
