Contemporary Art

Contemporary Art Collection

Contemporary Art is the art of our time; art that is recent, new or existing now, or art that reflects diverse societal values, identities and pertinent issues within the public discourse. It refers to art made from the 1960’s onward, this indicates the span of a generation—art that is contemporary with current life experiences. Contemporary Art has long been represented through special exhibitions at the Mint Museum Randolph beginning in 1939 with the presentation of Contemporary Art from the collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and continuing to the present day. Since 1990, the Museum has originated three contemporary exhibition series: ARTCurrents (1990-1998), New Frontiers (1999-2000) and most recently the VantagePoint series, which began in 2002.

The Contemporary Art Collection including: paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, installations, artists’ books and time-based media, continues to grow and strengthen. As a collection attention is given to present works of art by nationally-, internationally- and regionally-recognized artists representing a diverse cross-cultural perspective, and art that is confidently considered to be in the vanguard of current visual thinking.

Contemporary Art is moving to the Mint Museum Uptown opening October 1, 2010.For more information on the Mint's Contemporary Art interest group visit the Contemporary Coalition page.
