Loïs Mailou Jones: Portrayal of the African-American Male (Part I)
Tuesday, January 12, 6 p.m. at the Mint Museum Randolph

Free.
In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, visit the Mint for an inspired discussion about race and culture. From 6-6:45 p.m., tour the galleries to view the special exhibition Loïs Mailou Jones: A Life in Vibrant Color. A survey of the variety of Jones’ career; stretching from late post-Impressionism to a contemporary synthesis of African, Caribbean, American and African-American iconography, design and thematic elements. At 7 p.m., join Johnson C. Smith University Professor Hasaan Kirkland in the Van Every Auditorium for a lecture and discussion of the artist’s representation of the African-American male.


 

Loïs Mailou Jones: Portrayal of the African-American Male (Part II)
Thursday, January 14, 7 p.m. at Biddle Hall, Johnson C. Smith University.
Free.

Explore the portrayal of black males as represented in selected artworks by Loïs Mailou Jones and Michael Jackson’s song, Man in the Mirror in a town hall-style meeting. Moderated by JCSU Professor Hasaan Kirkland, the discussion features panelists from Johnson C. Smith University and the Charlotte community.

The Mint Museum, The Lee Institute, the Latin American Women’s Association and the Women’s Intercultural Exchange, cordially invites women in the Charlotte community for an evening celebrating contributions made by women. Join Hardison and Lynch as they reflect on the global impact of women in service, politics and education, and provide thoughts on how you can make an impact for positive change.

Women are invited to bring new or gently worn coats and blankets to donate to Crisis Assistance Ministry.
