About The Exhibition

Tom Hunter uses as his principle subject the lives and homes in his local community in Hackney, including the squatters and travelers he regularly encounters. He creates meticulously composed photographs that have art historical references, specifically referencing the paintings of Vermeer and the Pre-Raphaelites, in his series, Persons Unknown and Life and Death in Hackney, respectively. Though refracted though historical traditions, Hunter's photographs directly engage with the modern (or postmodern) world. His photographs walk the fine line of documentative anthropology and sensuous beauty.
