John Cederquist creates fine art furniture with vivid imagery and functional form. The energetic swordfish in Pipe Dream was inspired by Japanese woodblock prints and popular iconography. Cederquist is a master illusionist, and standing directly in front of the work, the viewer’s eye may be fooled: it’s not readily apparent that the colorful movement of the fish is actually the front of a set of drawers that interconnect like puzzle pieces.
Cederquist earned his B.A. in 1969 and M.A. in 1971 at California State University at Long Beach, and received two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, in 1975 and 1986. He was honored with the Award of Distinction in 2010 by the Furniture Society of America and operates a studio in Capistrano, California.
