Scene in America: A Contemporary Look at the Black Male Image explores the multiple ways in which artists of various races and genders address issues of race and identity when using images of Black males in their work. Comprised of 27 paintings, photographs, works on paper and sculptures, this exhibition includes works from The Mint Museum's collection, the Van Every/Smith Gallery Collection of Davidson College and private collectors and artists.
The first of its kind at The Mint Museum, this exhibition investigates shifts in power—from usurpation to attainment—found in contemporary portrayals of black masculinity. Throughout our country's history, many African-American men have labored for a piece of the American Dream, only to confront obstacles resulting from the legacy of slavery, stereotyping and persecution. The possibility of these obstacles being overcome is conveyed through images of activism, family and community as well as the achievement of a resilient and positive identity.
